Looking for a Nanny? First Stop Laptop

Big Apple Parent Magazine: 08/2007

It makes sense that with so many businesses moving online, searching for nannies should also be possible via the click of a computer mouse. Ask Robert Woodring, an Upper East Side dad, who recently created NYC Nanny Finder-which allows pre-screening of candidates by watching short videos online. You can also view resumes online.

Woodring’s business inspiration occurred during the search for his son Alexander’s nanny, which Woodring and wife Darlene began when Alexander was 13 months old. “Four long weeks” were spent interviewing several nannies a day, sent by placement agencies. Woodring remembers growing frustrated with the poor service and results. His company aims to shorten that time; he reports that some families find a nanny in a few days, though some take a week or two. NYC Nanny Finder also checks references, saving time after you find someone you like because she’s already been vetted.

The company can fulfill a variety of needs. There are nannies who speak two or three languages, and part-time, full-time or live-in help is available. Woodring’s nanny candidates come from varied backgrounds, and include teachers, nurses and college students.

NYC NANNY FINDER FEATURES ONLINE VIDEO TECHNOLOGY, REVOLUTIONIZING THE NANNY PLACEMENT EXPERIENCE

New York, NY, January 16, 2007 –A New York City father creates an online video nanny placement agency customized for busy New York City families.

The nanny placement process in New York City leaves many families spending valuable time interviewing dozens of candidates that fall short of their requirements and expectations. Why is this process so difficult? The root of the problem begins with the agencies that refer them, as they decide which candidates they send to families based off whom they feel is the right match. "We knew most of the nannies were not right for us within the first few minutes of meeting them. If only we had the ability to pre-screen them first, we could have saved ourselves a lot of time. That was the genesis of NYC Nanny Finder which went live September 2006 and has been proving to be a success," said Robert Woodring founder of NYC Nanny Finder.

NYC Nanny Finder is the first and only nanny placement agency providing New Yorkers with convenient online video interviews, resumes and references for all candidates, saving families time and money when searching for their perfect nanny. How to Find the Right Nanny on the UES

Uppereast.com 01/11/2007
by Christine Chagaris

Many families on the Upper East Side have faced the dilemma of trying to find the right nanny. The situations can vary greatly, ranging from first-time parents to those who have just relocated to the city who are in need of responsible care for their children.

Help is on the way. There are experts in this field ready to offer good advice for starters, and there is an innovative nanny service called NYC Nanny Finder, was launched in September of last year. Founder Robert Woodring started the company from personal experience trying to navigate the rough Manhattan waters of attempting to find a suitable nanny. "My wife and I, as Upper East Side parents, were trying to find a nanny for our 13 month-old son," he says. "We ultimately did find a nanny through a referral, but agencies were sending over droves of people for us to interview before that, to no avail. I thought there had to be a better way to go through this whole process." Robert’s idea for NYC Nanny Finder was then born.

NYC Nanny Finder is the first and only nanny placement agency providing New Yorkers with convenient online video interviews, resumes and references for all candidates. They claim to save families significant time and money when searching for their perfect nanny.

The company believes strongly in its focus on online videos of nannies, along with resumes and references for parents to prescreen. "This way, families can see candidates in advance then conveniently schedule times online to meet with the candidates of their choice. This helps the parents to save time. Consequently, they have less people to interview." The nannies that get to present themselves on a video are those who have met NYC Nanny Finder rigorous requirements. "Out of about 50-75 candidates per week that we see, we end up choosing about three to seven," Woodring explains. "They must be legal to work in the U.S., and have a minimum of three years of checkable references in the tri-state area. We also run a full background check." Most of the nannies are CPR-certified. NYC Nanny Finder provides nannies for a full-range of situations: live-in; live-out; part-time; full-time; etc.

Woodring says that beyond tangible information such as references, the most important factor in picking which nannies make the cut is his own gut feeling. He also says that it is important to match a nanny with the most comfortable situation. For example, one nanny may feel more at ease with newborns than toddlers or vice-versa. "The nanny’s comfort level is very important to take into account," he says. The past few years have seen the demand for nannies on the Upper East Side rise, as there has been a population boom in the city. "Many households are made up of two-income families on the Upper East Side, since it’s such an expensive area to live in," Woodring says. "So, now more than ever, parents who both work are eager to find good nannies to watch their children."

NYC Nanny Finder also has a Parents Corner on its website where families can go to find helpful resources for important nanny employment factors such as tax preparation and CPR classes.

Woodring has some advice for parents who are looking for a reputable nanny. "It’s important not to get overwhelmed and panic. Parents should go with their gut feelings when choosing a nanny and know that they have the option to be selective … and choose a nanny who will be a good fit." Mr. Woodring and the team at NYC Nanny Finder can be reached at 646-660-2401.

Pamela Weinberg, the author (along with Kelly Ashton) of City Baby: The Ultimate Guide for NYC Parents from Pregnancy to Preschool, echoes this sentiment. "Doormen know everybody in the building, and also know when people are moving and may not need their nanny anymore," she says. She, like Woodring, stresses the importance of gut feeling when choosing a nanny. "Also, I think for first-time moms, it’s really important of course to get somebody who has experience with newborns."

Sally Wilkinson, founder of a Manhattan-based agency that helps to advise area families on choosing a nanny, has this to offer. "It’s vital for parents to take the nanny interview very seriously and ask very relevant questions. For example, it’s important to know how a potential nanny would deal with a particular type of emergency. You obviously can’t just rely on written references."

Ultimately, a host of factors will come into play when a family makes its nanny choice. Making the best decision in a timely manner requires both good information and great "tools" to help make the decision, such as those offered by Woodring and his team at NYC Nanny Finder.
